POSITION DESCRIPTION: Lifeguard / Aquatics Specialist
(Seasonal Summer Camp) 

Employment Type: Seasonal, part-time to full-time
Season (Typical): June through mid-August
Compensation: Competitive hourly or weekly pay, commensurate with experience
Reports To: Head Lifeguard / Waterfront Director 

Position Summary 

Latvian Center Garezers Lifeguards supervise all swimming, boating, and waterfront activities. They enforce waterfront safety rules and respond to incidents, including performing rescues and providing emergency assistance when needed, to ensure camper and staff safety. Lifeguards are members of the camp’s aquatics team and work under the direction of the Head Lifeguard/Waterfront Director. They are expected to follow all Waterfront Manual procedures and participate fully in required trainings and drills while supporting the broader camp community.

Essential Responsibilities 

Water Safety & Supervision 

  • Provide active surveillance during swimming, boating, and waterfront activities
  • Enforce swim area rules, buddy systems, and safety procedures 
  • Perform rescues and first aid as needed 
  • Respond immediately to emergencies following training protocols 

Camper Support 

  • Assist with swimmer testing and classification 
  • Encourage safe, respectful, and inclusive participation in water activities 
  • Communicate with counselors and program staff regarding camper needs

Facilities & Equipment 

  • Assist with daily setup and takedown of waterfront areas 
  • Inspect equipment for safety and report hazards 
  • Help keep waterfront areas clean and organized 

Teamwork & Camp Life 

  • Participate in training, drills, and staff meetings 
  • Assist with special events, evening programs, and camp activities when assigned
  • Support a positive, professional camp culture 

Qualifications (Minimum Requirements) 

  • At least 18 years of age 
  • Current Lifeguard Certification (Red Cross or equivalent) 
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification 
  • Waterfront-specific certification for lake environments 
  • Ability to work outdoors and with children in an active setting 

Equipment Used 

Rescue tubes, ring buoys, backboards, PFDs, boats, radios, whistles, and first aid supplies.

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

  • Ability to swim, rescue, and lift 50+ lbs 
  • Ability to stand, run, and move quickly for long periods 
  • Visual and auditory awareness of swimmers and hazards 
  • Comfort working in sun, heat, and water
