POSITION DESCRIPTION: Camp Activities Director
(Seasonal Summer Position; Part-Time Year-Round)

Works Closely With: Program Directors (GBD, GBN, GSS, GVV), Activity Specialists, Certified Aquatic Supervisor/Waterfront leadership, Facilities, and Health Center staff 

Position Summary 

Latvian Center Garezers seeks an experienced and energetic Camp Activities Director to lead the design, coordination, and delivery of safe, engaging, and memorable camp activities. This role is the central organizer for activity programming—supporting a wide range of offerings (sports, arts, nature, STEM, performance, range activities, and more)—and ensuring smooth daily operations across activity areas. 

Position Purpose 

To further the mission of Latvian Center Gaŗezers by developing and delivering safe, fun, and age-appropriate activity programming that supports youth development, community life, and positive camper experiences. The Activities Director builds strong systems for scheduling, staffing, equipment readiness, and activity-area safety to ensure high-quality programming throughout the season. 

Required Training & Screening 

  • Must complete required pre-season and orientation training prior to assuming job responsibilities, unless alternative arrangements are approved by Garezers leadership.
  • Must participate in ongoing, role-specific and mandatory trainings throughout the season as applicable. 
  • Employment is subject to background checks and screening appropriate to the role and level of responsibility. 

Essential Responsibilities 

Program Leadership & Design 

  • Develop the vision and strategy for summer activity offerings by assessing facilities, staff strengths, and program needs
  • Design, implement, and oversee innovative activities for GBD, GBN, GSS, and GVV that are engaging, inclusive, and safely delivered 
  • Ensure activity plans match camper age, ability, and supervision needs

Staffing, Supervision & Team Culture 

  • Recruit, interview, schedule, and supervise activity specialists 
  • Provide clear expectations, coaching, and troubleshooting support to activity staff
  • Conduct verbal and written evaluations of activity specialists and support performance improvement when needed (in coordination with the Executive Director) 

Scheduling & Operations 

  • Build and manage the activity schedule and staffing plan for the season
  • Support camper placement into appropriate groups and activity levels
  • Oversee required documentation related to activity operations (certifications, permits, specialist records, etc.) 

Budgeting, Supplies & Equipment 

  • Develop and manage the activities budget in consultation with the Executive Director
  • Determine supply and equipment needs; coordinate purchasing and inventory for activity areas 
  • Maintain fiscal responsibility related to activity supplies and specialist support

Safety, Risk Management & Incident Reporting 

  • Ensure activity areas (fields, courts, program spaces, and equipment zones) are clean, safe, and ready for use 
  • Align activities with camp safety procedures and role-specific safety training
  • Promptly report and document injuries, accidents, illnesses, or near-miss incidents according to camp procedures 

Waterfront & Specialty Activities Coordination 

  • Coordinate with the Certified Aquatic Supervisor/Waterfront leadership for waterfront activity scheduling and integration 
  • Ensure waterfront activities are conducted only under authorized aquatics supervision and that waterfront emergency procedures and drills remain within waterfront command systems 

Meetings & Year-Round Planning 

  • Attend weekly administration/program meetings as requested during the summer season
  • Participate in year-round planning sessions with Program Directors and relevant committees (scope and frequency as assigned) 

Qualifications (Minimum Requirements) 

  • Must be 21 years of age and a high school graduate; some college preferred
  • Ability to obtain/maintain First Aid/CPR certification (or higher, as required by role assignments) 
  • Unrestricted driver’s license 
  • Completion of required health history record and examination 
  • Documented leadership/supervisory experience 
  • Documented training and experience in at least one activity area (references or documentation required) 
  • Specialized certification(s) as required for assigned activities (examples: lifeguard/swim instructor, aquatic specialist, archery/range instructor, riding specialist, challenge course specialist) 

Language: Latvian language proficiency is preferred for direct work with campers ages 3–18; exceptions may be made based on staffing needs and program structure. 

Teamwork & Communication 

The Activities Director works daily with counselors, program directors, specialists, and administrative staff. Clear communication, proactive problem-solving, and a calm, professional approach are required—especially when managing schedule changes, weather adjustments, equipment issues, or camper needs. 

Equipment & Systems Used 

May include a wide range of recreational and specialty equipment related to program areas. May use camp operational equipment (washers/dryers, fire protection equipment, radios), and may drive camp vehicles or golf carts when authorized. 

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

  • Ability to maintain an active schedule and supervise multiple activity areas throughout the day 
  • Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and first aid situations
  • Capacity for standing, walking, lifting/carrying equipment, and working outdoors in varied weather 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify hazards and respond promptly
