POSITION DESCRIPTION: Activity Specialist (Activity Leader)
(Seasonal Summer Position)

Position Summary 

Activity Specialists are assigned to lead a defined activity area and bring skill, energy, and structure to daily programming. Activity areas may include (but are not limited to): sports and games, arts & crafts, performance arts, nature, cooking, STEM, ranged activities, and approved waterfront programming. 

Position Purpose 

To further the mission of Latvian Center Garezers by planning and delivering safe, engaging, and age-appropriate activities that support camper growth, skills development, and a positive camp experience. 

Eligibility & Qualifications (Minimum Requirements) 

  • Minimum 16 years of age; work hours and duties for minors comply with Michigan child labor restrictions, and minors may not perform hazardous duties prohibited by law.
  • Must be currently enrolled in high school or a high school graduate 
  • Ability to obtain/hold current First Aid/CPR certification as required by assignment
  • Unrestricted driver’s license (required only if assigned duties involve vehicle operation and if authorized) 
  • Must complete required health history record and examination forms as required by Garezers procedures 
  • Documented training/experience in the assigned activity area (references or documentation required) 
  • Specialized certification(s) as required for the activity (e.g., lifeguard/swim instructor, aquatic specialist, archery/range instructor, riding specialist, challenge course specialist) 

Language: Latvian language proficiency is preferred for work with campers ages 6–18 when the role requires frequent instruction or conversation in Latvian; exceptions may be made based on staffing needs and program structure. 

Training Requirements

  • Must complete required pre-season and orientation training prior to assuming job responsibilities, unless alternative arrangements are approved by Garezers leadership.
  • Must attend ongoing, role-specific and mandatory trainings throughout the season as applicable. 

Essential Responsibilities 

Activity Leadership & Camper Supervision

  • Lead, teach, and supervise campers during assigned activity periods to meet intended outcomes 
  • Maintain active supervision and safe group management at all times
  • Use age-appropriate instruction and basic youth development practices (clear communication, inclusion, respect, positive encouragement) 
  • Prepare and implement a “Plan B” for each activity period (e.g., indoor or weather-safe alternatives) and adjust programming as needed when activities are canceled or impacted by rain, heat, air quality, or other safety considerations. 

Safety, Risk Management & Reporting 

  • Follow all camp safety rules, posted instructions, and role-specific safety training at all times 
  • Use required safety equipment and protective gear as instructed 
  • Promptly report and document all injuries, accidents, illnesses, or near-miss incidents to a supervisor according to camp procedures 
  • Identify hazards or unsafe conditions in the activity area and communicate them promptly to leadership/Facilities 

Planning, Supplies & Area Readiness 

  • Participate in activity planning and preparation consistent with program schedules and camp expectations 
  • Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and organization of the activity area/workshop
  • Conduct routine checks of equipment and space for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
  • Track basic inventory of supplies/equipment and communicate replacement needs in a timely manner 

Coordination & Camp Community Life 

  • Coordinate with counselors and program leaders to support camper placement, transitions, and group needs 
  • Participate as a member of the staff team for evening programs, special events, and all-camp activities as assigned
  • When not scheduled in an activity area, may support camper supervision or other assigned duties based on program needs and staffing 

Professionalism & Role Modeling 

  • Maintain professional conduct and respectful communication with campers and staff
  • Follow dress and appearance expectations appropriate to a youth-serving camp environment 
  • Represent the activity area with positive leadership, good sportsmanship, and consistent expectations 

Equipment & Vehicles 

Activity Specialists may use specialty program equipment relevant to their assignment, and may be asked to use camp operational equipment (washers/dryers, fire protection equipment, radios). Only authorized and trained staff may operate camp vehicles, golf carts, or utility vehicles.

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

  • Ability to maintain constant supervision of campers and respond appropriately to emergencies 
  • Physical stamina for active days, lifting/carrying equipment, and working indoors/outdoors 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to hazards in the activity environment
  • Ability to assist campers in emergencies (fire, evacuation, illness, injury)

Waterfront & Specialty Activities Note (if applicable) 

If assigned to waterfront programming, Activity Specialists must follow waterfront rules and work under appropriate aquatics supervision, including required safety systems and emergency procedures. Watercraft activities require trained staff and enforced safety rules, including use of approved PFDs.
