COUNSELOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION: COUNSELOR, for seasonal summer camp
Reports to: Program Director (GBN, GSS or GVV)
Position Purpose:
Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

Essential Job Functions:

CAMP ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR

Description:
Latvian Center Garezers is seeking an experienced Full Time Summer Camp Activities Director for an exciting opportunity to bring their vision to our summer camp. As the Camp Activities Director, you will be the go-to person for all things related to camp activities with the goal of creating a memorable and meaningful camp experience for our campers. Activities include, but are not limited to: sports, games, waterfront, range activities, arts and crafts, performance arts, nature, cooking, S.T.E.M.*
Reports to: Executive Director year round and coordinates with Program Directors during the summer season.
Position Purpose: To further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Coordinate schedules, oversee maintenance of activity areas and enable smooth operation of all of the seasonal camp activities.
As the facilitator of fun, the Summer Camp Activities Director will ensure safety and age-appropriate summer activities. This position will oversee the vision, budget, and operations of summer camp activities programs for all our programs (GBN, GSS and GVV), including but not limited to, program creation, administration, coordination, and supervision of all functions. The Director provides leadership and direction for activities to the activities specialists and counselors staff and is responsible for all activity operations. FOOD SERVICE DIRECTOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION: FOOD SERVICE DIRECTOR, for seasonal summer camp
Reports to: This position reports to the Executive Director
Position Purpose:
The Food Service Director position is seasonal (June through middle of August) and is managed and supervised day to day by the Executive Director. This position also works closely with other administrative staff, summer program leaders, event project coordinators, and other volunteers to complete tasks.
Qualifications:
- At least 21 years of age
- ServeSafe or comparable food safety certification, or willing to attain certification
- Familiarity with Michigan Food Law, as required by the Community Health Agency
- Training and experience in purchase of food, in meal planning that meets nutritional needs of campers, and in food preparation and food safety
- Experience in supervising food service employees
- Willingness and ability to adjust to camp resources, conditions and program
The primary job responsibilities of this position are wide-spread and include:
- Help recruit and interview summer kitchen staff
- Plan and execute menus for three meals a day, plus snacks, for all campers and staff
- Willingness to adapt menu to accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences of camp community
- Budgeting, ordering, maintaining food and supply inventory
- Check incoming food and kitchen supplies against orders and invoices

Kitchen Staff members are responsible for assisting in the preparation of meals and snacks for all camp programs under the direction of the Food Service Director.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience):
- Minimum 16 years of age
- Must complete mandatory health history record and examination (application will not be considered complete until submitted)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Prior experience in a similar position preferred.
- Knowledge of food safety procedures.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities.
- Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
Essential Job Functions:
- Washing, chopping, shredding, slicing and grating ingredients.
- Assisting with the unloading of deliveries.
- Storing ingredients according to prescribed food safety regulations.

HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT
POSITION DESCRIPTION: HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT, for seasonal summer camp
Reports to: Health Care Manager
Position Purpose:
The Health Care Assistant is responsible for assisting in providing health and safety services to campers and staff. Note that local emergency service response time to camp is approximately 15 minutes.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience):
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Current first aid certification. Advanced levels may be required depending on the camps location and distance from emergency services as well as other medical personnel available on site.
- Current CPR certification
- Experience in first aid and emergency management services
- Unrestricted driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in both children and adult illness/injury care
- Desire to work with the camp’s target population
- Community health knowledge
- Demonstrated competency in basic first aid practices and techniques
- Ability to function in stressful situations and successfully address multiple priorities

Essential Job Functions:
- Under the direct supervision of the Health Care Manager, assist in providing health care and first aid services to meet the needs of camp staff and campers.
- Assist with daily medication management. Help supervise and care for people admitted to the Health Center for care.
- Provide CPR and First Aid coverage as needed at designated times and locations. c. Provide direct care to staff within the scope of their skills, the camp’s health care manual, and treatment procedures.
- Assist in maintaining health and safety practices while working in other areas throughout camp.
- Monitor athletic areas and waterfront to ensure adequate water, sunscreen, and other prevention materials.
- Monitor campers to ensure appropriate personal hygiene wash before entering the dining area.
- Work with other staff to minimize/eliminate health and safety risks.
Other Job Duties:
- May accompany campers off-site for clinic visits.
- This position is sometimes combined with another position such as Activity Specialist or Counselor. Job duties outline times when the person is on first aid duty and when their primary focus is the other position.
Team work and Communication:
First Aid positions are often linked to activity areas in addition to them being a part of the health care staff. First aid staff often have the added role of ensuring safety in the high risk areas of camp.

Position Purpose:
Maintenance Staff members are responsible for maintaining the facilities and grounds of the camp and campgrounds under the direction of the Facilities Manager and Assistant Facilities Manager.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience):
- Minimum 16 years of age
- Unrestricted driver’s license
- Must complete mandatory health history record and examination (application will not be considered complete until submitted)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Physical endurance to do manual labor
- Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions
- Must be able to work alone and unsupervised at times

Teamwork and Communication:
Maintenance staff generally has interaction with virtually all other departments including kitchen staff, waterfront staff, program staff and office staff.

Physical Requirements:
Some physical requirements of a Maintenance Staff position could be endurance including bending, stooping, kneeling, walking long distances, requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight and the ability to lift in excess 50 lbs Willing to live in a rustic camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, mice, etc.
WATERFRONT/AQUATICS SPECIALIST - LIFEGUARD
POSITION DESCRIPTION: WATERFRONT/AQUATICS SPECIALIST – LIFEGUARD, for seasonal summer camp
Reports to: The position generally would report to the Lifeguard supervisor or the Executive Director of the Latvian Center Garezers.
Position Purpose:
To further the mission of the camp by providing supervision and ensuring a safe environment at the camp’s waterfront activities. Maintain the physical operation of the waterfront facilities and equipment.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Current certification in lifeguard training or equivalent.
- Current certification in first aid and CPR. Advanced certification may be required based on camp location and site of delivery of aquatic programs.
- Prior desirable experience at a waterfront similar to the camp’s.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Training and experience in waterfront activities that are offered at the camp.
- Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in the water.
Essential Job Functions:
- Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff.
- Supervise and monitor all waterfront activities
- Provide surveillance during aquatic activities to help prevent and to manage injuries.
- Provide rescues as needed.
- Utilize first aid and CPR and other emergency management procedures as needed.
- Understand and implement appropriate response to changes in water conditions or weather conditions affecting the waterfront.
- Set- up the waterfront and beach house pre-season and inspect and inventory equipment.
- Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
- Clean and maintain waterfront area daily keeping it free of hazards and debris.
- Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures and assist in the delivery and supervision of all water activities and special events at the waterfront.
Other Job Duties:
- Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
- Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the waterfront.
Teamwork and communication:
Lifeguards often have direct communication with the program directors and counseling staff and may actually serve as a counselor with a camper group when not on duty at the waterfront. Most often the health care and emergency plan outlines the relationship between the health care staff and the waterfront staff for emergency management and care.
Equipment Used:
Identify the specific equipment, facilities, and watercraft utilized at the camp which may be the responsibility of this position. Note the size of the craft, type of waterfront and related hazards.

CAMP NURSE
POSITION DESCRIPTION: Camp Nurse
Up to full time during summer season (~ 9 weeks). Salary is commensurate with experience. Expectation to participate in scheduled educational leadership meetings.
Description:
Latvian Center Garezers is seeking an experienced Summer Program Nurse for an exciting opportunity to bring their vision to our summer camp. During the summer programs the Nurse oversees program employees and participants. The Nurse performs the planning and day-to-day administration of medications and offer “walk-in” first aid services on a 24-hour basis.
The Camp Nurse is subject to the Constitution of the Latvian Center Garezers, the rules and regulations of the Latvian Center Garezers, the direction of the Board of Directors of the Latvian Center Garezers and applicable law.
Time Commitment:
The individual who fills this position will be expected to be on site up to full time during the summer season (~ 9 weeks).
About Latvian Center Garezers:
The Latvian Center Garezers has several camp, overnight summer camp programs and educational programs for youth of Latvian descent, with the motto “For God and Latvia”. Founded in 1965, our programs have grown each year and now serve over 300+ campers ages 5-18 in one of four summer programs – GBD (day camp for preschool age), GBN (overnight camp 6-11 yrs of age), GSS (11-13 yrs of age overnight camp and junior high educational program) and GVV (14-18 yrs of age overnight camp and high school educational program). Activities include outdoor sports and environmental education programs. Garezers seeks to hire staff that reinforces the development of a love of the Latvian culture and language.
Reports to: Executive Director year round and coordinates with other Program Directors during the summer season.
Position Purpose:
To further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of first aid, infection/hazard prevention and medication management appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. Coordinate schedules, assist the Activities director in the surveillance of activity areas and enable safe operation of all of the seasonal camp activities.
The Nurse provides health leadership and direction for teachers, activity specialists and counselor staff and is responsible for all operations of the Health Center while on duty.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)
- Graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing.
- Current, unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
- Must be knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and its effective application.
- Must be able to appropriately assess treatment and care for specific patient populations; must possess the ability to understand and react effectively to their unique needs.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers
- Additional Department-specific credentials, as recommended
- Must have an unrestricted driver’s license

- Latvian language proficiency suitable for work with campers ages 6-18 is preferred.

Essential Job Functions:
- Utilizing the Nursing Process, provides nursing care, as defined by Scope of Practice, to assigned patients.
- Coordinates care planning with other disciplines and supervises other members of the nursing health team.
- Serves as an integral member of the Leadership Team, making day-to-day plans and far-reaching decisions about the future of the programs.
- Attend weekly meetings during the summer season.

- Facilitates and provides observation, feedback, and goal setting meetings throughout the camp season for counselor and instructor staff
- Assists the Activity Directors in the design, implementation, and delivering of camp activities that meet the needs and interests of the camp’s target populations (GBN, GSS, GVV) and ensure their delivery in a safe manner.
- Addresses prevention efforts, strategies, and crisis management issues related to campers as outlined in Program Manuals.
