POSITION DESCRIPTION: Maintenance Staff
(Seasonal Summer Camp)

Reports To: Facilities Manager 

Position Purpose: 

Maintenance Staff support the safe, clean, and functional operation of camp facilities and grounds. Under the direction of Facilities Management, Maintenance Staff help prepare camp for opening, maintain buildings and outdoor areas during the season, and support events and program operations through setup, repairs, cleaning, and grounds work. 

Eligibility & Qualifications (Minimum Requirements) 

  • Minimum 16 years of age (work assignments for minors will comply with applicable legal restrictions; minors may not perform hazardous duties prohibited by law).
  • Valid, unrestricted driver’s license (required for roles that may operate camp vehicles, as approved) 
  • Must complete mandatory health history record and examination forms as required by Garezers procedures 
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work independently at times
  • Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn 
  • Prior experience with grounds tools and small power/hand tools is preferred but not required

Training Requirements 

  • Must complete required pre-employment and orientation training before beginning job duties, unless alternative arrangements are approved by Garezers leadership.
  • Must attend ongoing, role-specific and mandatory trainings throughout the season as applicable, including equipment/vehicle and operational safety training when required. 

Essential Responsibilities 

Seasonal Opening & Closing Support 

  • Prepare camper and program areas for season opening (cleaning rooms, assembling furniture, basic room repairs) 
  • Complete pre-season deep cleaning projects as assigned (including bathrooms and common spaces)
  • Support end-of-season closing tasks as assigned (cleanout, storage, shutdown preparation) 

Grounds Maintenance 

  • Perform routine grounds work including mowing, weed-whacking, leaf blowing, brush removal, and debris clean-up 
  • Maintain a clean, safe exterior environment around cabins, program areas, and common spaces 

Cleaning & Sanitation Support 

  • Clean bathrooms (sinks, showers, toilets), sweep/mop as needed, and support larger cleaning projects (e.g., dining hall) 
  • Collect and dispose of garbage/refuse daily; manage dumpsters and waste areas safely
  • Collect boxes/recycling daily from the kitchen and transport as directed 

Facilities Repairs & General Maintenance 

  • Assist with general repairs and upkeep under Facilities Management direction (painting/staining, power washing, minor carpentry, basic upkeep) 
  • Assist with unloading deliveries and moving supplies/equipment 
  • Support vehicle and equipment upkeep as assigned and trained 

Events & Operations Support 

  • Set up and break down for camp and community events (tables/chairs, tents, coolers, grills, refrigerators, sound equipment, whiteboards, etc.) 
  • Support off-site or special event logistics as assigned 

Safety & Communication 

  • Promptly report hazards, damaged equipment, or unsafe conditions to Facilities Management 
  • Report and document all injuries, accidents, illnesses, or near-miss incidents promptly to a supervisor per camp procedures. 
  • Wear appropriate clothing/footwear for physical labor and use required protective equipment (PPE) as directed. 

Timekeeping & Work Expectations 

  • Working hours may vary based on camp operations and events 
  • Overtime must be approved in advance by a supervisor when applicable
  • All non-exempt staff must accurately record all time worked; working off the clock is not permitted 

Teamwork & Communication 

Maintenance Staff interact with nearly all departments (kitchen, waterfront, program staff, office staff, and leadership). Professional communication, responsiveness to work orders, and a cooperative approach are essential. 

Equipment Used 

May include (based on age, training, and authorization): 

  • Grounds equipment: weed-whackers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, rakes, shovels
  • Small power tools: drills, saws, and related equipment 
  • Hand tools: hammers, wrenches, hand saws, etc. 
  • Camp vehicles/equipment: gator/utility vehicles, brush hog, golf carts (as trained and authorized) 

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

  • Physical endurance for manual labor including bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and walking long distances 
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs and safely operate tools and equipment 
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify hazards and respond promptly 
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varied weather and in a rustic camp environment (sun, heat, insects, and wildlife)
