POSITION DESCRIPTION: Health Care Assistant
(Seasonal Summer Camp)

Position Purpose: 

The Health Care Assistant supports the Health Center team in providing health and safety services to campers and staff. This role assists with first aid coverage, health center operations, and medication processes under the supervision of the Head Camp Nurse/Health Care Manager. Local emergency response time to camp is approximately 15 minutes (conditions may vary). 

Eligibility & Qualifications (Minimum Requirements) 

  • Minimum 18 years of age 
  • Current CPR certification 
  • Current First Aid certification (advanced certification may be required depending on assigned duties and camp needs) 
  • Experience in first aid and emergency response or a demonstrated ability to perform effectively in urgent situations 
  • Unrestricted driver’s license 
  • Basic computer and office skills 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism with health-related information 

Training Requirements 

  • Must complete required pre-employment and orientation training before beginning job duties, unless alternative arrangements are approved by Garezers leadership
  • Must attend ongoing, role-specific and mandatory training sessions throughout the season as applicable 

Essential Responsibilities 

Health Center Support & Camper/Staff Care 

  • Under direct supervision of the Head Camp Nurse/Health Care Manager, assist in providing first aid and basic health services to campers and staff 
  • Assist with supervision and care of individuals admitted to the Health Center for observation or treatment
  • Assist with documentation and recordkeeping as directed, maintaining accuracy and timeliness 

Medication Support (Authorized Health Staff Only) 

  • Support daily medication processes as assigned and trained by the Head Camp Nurse/Health Care Manager 
  • Follow all Health Center procedures and camp medication rules; only authorized and trained personnel may store, administer, or distribute medication 
  • Help ensure medications are secured and handled according to camp procedures (campers do not keep medications with them except prescribed epi pens and inhalers) 

First Aid Coverage & Prevention 

  • Provide first aid/CPR coverage as assigned at designated times and locations (including activity areas as needed) 
  • Support prevention efforts across camp (hydration reminders, sunscreen access, monitoring high-risk areas) in coordination with program leadership and waterfront leadership as appropriate 
  • Work collaboratively with staff to minimize health and safety risks 

Communication, Safety & Incident Reporting 

  • Promptly report and document all injuries, accidents, illnesses, or near-miss incidents involving campers, staff, or guests according to camp procedures
  • Promptly report any illness, injury, medical concern, or medication-related issue to the Health Center or a supervisor 
  • Communicate clearly with the Head Camp Nurse/Health Care Manager and relevant leadership regarding coverage needs, trends (injury/illness patterns), and operational concerns 

Other Duties 

  • May accompany campers off-site for clinic/medical visits as directed by the Health Center staff (Health Center staff arranges transportation and coordinates care when outside evaluation is needed) 
  • This position may be combined with another role (e.g., Counselor or Activity Specialist). In such cases, duty schedules will clearly define when the individual is on health/first aid duty versus their other assigned role. 

Teamwork & Communication

Health Care Assistants often work in and around activity areas in addition to Health Center duties. Clear, calm communication and strong teamwork are essential, especially during urgent situations and when coordinating with program leadership. 

Equipment Used 

May include first aid supplies, basic medical equipment, Health Center equipment, communication devices, and computerized documentation systems as assigned and trained. (Camp designates the specific level of first aid equipment available for this position.) 

Physical & Environmental Requirements 

  • Ability to lift/assist campers and staff as needed 
  • Ability to read and follow medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent documentation 
  • Ability to maintain written/electronic records accurately and confidentially
  • Ability to move quickly to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain
  • Ability to observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions 
  • Stamina and composure to respond effectively during emergencies
